Patty Kuderer was sworn in as Washington’s ninth Insurance Commissioner on Jan. 15, 2025.

Commissioner Kuderer is committed to protecting consumers, promoting transparency and fairness in the insurance market, and advocating for expanded access to affordable health care.

Previously, Commissioner Kuderer served for almost a decade in the Washington State Legislature, appointed as state representative in 2015 and then as the 48th Legislative District’s first female state senator in 2017. During her time in the Legislature, she championed consumer and worker protections, common sense gun legislation, and increasing access to affordable housing. She also worked to reform Washington’s health care system. Additionally, Commissioner Kuderer has extensive legal experience as a trial attorney, including serving as a former prosecutor, city attorney, and in private practice. She has handled public records, employment discrimination, and serious injury cases.

In 2022, Commissioner Kuderer was selected as a Henry Toll Fellow through the Council of State Governments in recognition of her leadership as a state senator. She also has volunteered with numerous nonprofit organizations over the years. This includes serving as a long-time volunteer for the Chinook Middle School Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA), where she was honored with the prestigious statewide Golden Acorn award for her service in 2006.

Commissioner Kuderer earned a Juris Doctor (J.D.) from the William Mitchell College of Law (St. Paul, MN) and a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Minnesota.

The Washington State Office of the Insurance Commissioner (OIC) regulates the insurance industry in Washington, ensuring compliance with state and federal laws and financial solvency. It also investigates complaints on behalf of policyholders, investigates reports of insurance fraud, and helps Washingtonians understand Medicare.
